Nigerian cement giant Dangote Cement announced a $1 billion agreement with China’s Sinoma Engineering to build new plants and modernise existing facilities across Africa. This major investment aims to raise total production capacity to 80 million tonnes annually by 2030, strengthening the group’s leading position on the continent.
The agreement, signed on February 28, covers 12 distinct projects in seven African countries: Nigeria, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Cameroon. Key initiatives include a new integrated production line with a grinding unit in northern Nigeria, an additional line in Ethiopia and capacity expansions in the other countries. These developments fit the group’s Vision 2030 strategy, focused on strengthening its domestic Nigerian presence, increasing exports and improving operational efficiency.
Despite a slight decline in sales volumes over the first nine months of 2025, Dangote Cement reported strong financial performance. Net profit rose 166.3% to 743.3 billion naira, around $539.8 million, while revenue increased 23.2% to 3,154 billion naira from 2,560 billion the previous year. These results highlight resilience amid economic challenges, particularly inflation and currency fluctuations in Nigeria.
Aliko Dangote, founder and chairman of Dangote Group, stressed the projects’ importance: “These initiatives remain essential to achieving our annual production target of 80 million tonnes. Planned investments will strengthen the company’s domestic market position, increase export volumes and improve operational efficiency across our activities.”
Dangote Cement chief executive Arvind Pathak said: “This agreement reflects the company’s determination to deepen investment in African markets, bridge cement supply gaps and support the continent’s infrastructure ambitions.”
Dangote Cement currently operates in ten African countries: Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire. Listed on the Lagos Stock Exchange, the company is part of Dangote Group, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates. The expansion comes as growing urbanisation and infrastructure projects drive demand for construction materials.
The expansion plan not only consolidates Dangote Cement’s leadership in sub-Saharan Africa but also contributes to employment and local economic development. With these investments, the group positions itself as a key participant in achieving the continent’s sustainable development goals, particularly in construction.
